Mothers and Mystery
This year, as we celebrate the mothers we know and love, let’s pause to reflect on the inseparable “communion with the mystery of life” that accompanies the nobility of motherhood. Let’s consider the enduring relationship between mother and child, and the concern it engenders toward others.
Thoughts and Prayers
Hearing the words struck me, as they have before when uttered by other politicians: “thoughts and prayers are not enough.” Yesterday, however, they came from a man of souls. And today, the first Thursday in May, is the National Day of Prayer, designated by Congress.
Mom and MLK
If asked, most people can recall a favorite quotation from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. No doubt a selection from his “I Have a Dream” speech (1963) may come quickly to mind. There’s one saying of his that is not as impassioned or as famous that struck me by its profound simplicity when I first heard it.
Receding Tribes
Half of the voters no longer find a home in the Republican or Democratic camps. What's more, the shift away from the major (do they continue to merit that classification?) parties is not one toward disaffected neutrality, but, as Axios puts it, “I’ll shop around, thank you.”

A Stand for Dignity
Today is a landmark anniversary for many of my generation and, in particular, for Christian Democrats. The occasion took me by surprise, but I cannot let it pass without sharing some reflections.
Cultural Decay, or This is the Day?
Last Monday (March 27), the Wall Street Journal published an article highlighting a recent poll the newspaper had commissioned. Conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC), the poll measured attitudes toward traditional American values and contrasted them against a similar poll performed 25 years ago. The results were predictable, but surprising.
Three Things
Three things. Three events that claimed lives and, moreover, will change the lives of survivors forever.
A Prime Example
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced another round of layoffs recently. The online retailer will shed another 9,000 jobs soon, on top of 18,000 job cuts announced earlier this year. The reduction will affect white collar employees in the administrative sector.
Pro-Life Testimony
Today, a legislative committee in my home state conducted a public hearing on a proposal to add the right to abortion as a provision of the state constitution. Following is the testimony I submitted to that hearing.
Money Down the Drain
The Biden Administration wants citizens to believe the problem is isolated and under control, and that U.S. taxpayers will share no burden in the loss. Of that claim I am unconvinced, but there’s still a larger picture to consider.
Bordering on Better Policy
Whether considered a stigma or an enigma, the problem of managing immigration and security along the border not only lingers but is increasing in magnitude.
