From Peter’s Desk: Fasting for the Common Good

“Fasting gives birth to prophets and strengthens the powerful; fasting makes lawgivers wise. Fasting is a good safeguard for the soul, a steadfast companion for the body, a weapon for the valiant, and gymnasium for athletes. Fasting repels temptations, anoints unto poetry; it is the comrade of watchfulness and the artificer of chastity. In war it fights bravely, in peace it teaches stillness.” — Basil the Great

As the Christian observance of Lent begins this week, I meditated on this reflection from the 4th-century theologian, Basil of Caesarea. During the 40-days of Lent, Christians fast, give alms, and pray in remembrance of Jesus’ prayer and fasting in the desert.

Fasting is a penitential custom and a healthy exercise in self-discipline, but not limited to Christians. In Islamic culture, a similar practice begins next month with the start of Ramadan. For Christians and Muslims alike, fasting is a call to look outward. It inspires a renewed focus on others and encourages us to practice charity to a greater extent. These penitential seasons are  a time for commitment to others and by extension - the common good.

This commitment to others is the definition of solidarity, a fundamental principle of our party.

Even if you do not participate in Lenten practices, Basil’s words are worthy of consideration. By denying yourself at times, it becomes easier to appreciate all that you have and what others may lack, and how you can help. When you make a sacrifice by limiting yourself, it is confirmation of your good will for others.

I invite you to make a conscious effort at outreach this week. Whether it's a good deed or donation, remind yourself it’s an expression of solidarity.

Lauren and I are grateful for your support, too. We appreciate the confidence you’ve placed in our candidacy and the ASP principles we are honored to represent. Please make an outreach to introduce the party to someone new this week, too. The ASP grows in both size and influence through the efforts of party supporters!
