From Peter’s Desk: May Day
It’s May 1 as I write this week’s message: May Day, as it’s known in many countries, is a Labor Day observance. In the United States, Labor Day is distinctly celebrated on the first Monday of September to avoid any connection with May Day’s socialist origins. America recognizes the contributions of laborers but advocates for capitalism, which May Day’s proponents openly opposed.
The American Solidarity Party’s view is unique from both capitalism and socialism. Taking its position from a Christian ethos, the ASP upholds the dignity of each human being as well as his or her creative contributions through labor. People are not merely a cog in the wheel of production or another component of raw material. Human labor mirrors God’s work of creation. It is not to be diminished, cheated or improperly remunerated, or directed toward meaningless or destructive ends.
Carrying the ASP banner, Lauren and I respect human work, promote workers’ rights and support organized labor movements.
Today also marked two significant events on the abortion front: the enactment of Florida’s heartbeat law, and the repeal in Arizona of a longstanding abortion law, made possible by the votes of two state Senate Republicans, which had become enforceable with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Lauren and I support a federal law to protect human life from the moment of conception. That said, I am grateful for the Florida law which bans abortion after six weeks of gestation. It will save many lives. Moreover, it makes clear the will of most voters that abortion is not a good end to crisis pregnancies.
Please help us spread the word about the American Solidarity Party and its respect for human life and human labor. We need your support, both volunteer and financial, to make an impact in November!
